Construction

This image shows the basic frame of the 3R and 3DS Midi Workstation. It comprises a left side frame, right side frame and bottom frame. Each are constructed of precision steel tube of sizes between 32mm sq x 1.6mm (1 1/4" x 16g) and 50mm sq (2" x 16g).

The welded truss construction of the side frames is extremely strong and together with the welded bottom frame provides the basis for an extremely strong and rigid workstation. The steel tube construction provides sufficient strength to consider taller workstation configurations. This is of importance when heavy components are positioned high up, and a design constraint for predominantly wooden structures, for which tall designs can't practically be considered because of a structurally inferior material.

Individual frames bolt together with M8 high tensile allen head screws.

This image shows a close up of the front desk edge. All desk, shelf and chipboard surfaces are edged with steel sections. This provides a much greater degree of strength and stiffness, and allows the use of larger spans up to 1800mm (72"). You can forget about any appreciable shelf sag. It also allows all stuctural joints to be steel to steel, without having to rely on chipboard components to provide structural strength which it doesn't offer. From a structural point of view the entire workstation is a steel structure. The use of chipboard is to provide cost effective and good looking horizontal surfaces only.

The front desk edge at right is in fact a steel tube. It has an anodized aluminium cover channel to provide a nice flush and level joint with the chipboard desk surface on top.

This image shows a close up view of the side frame bottom skid with castors attached. Castors are 80mm (3 1/4") dia. and are rated at 50kg (110lbs) ea. Maximum of 6 castors can be fitted to each side frame skid. Standard is 4. Front and rear castors have lockable brakes.
